A thesis in quantum chemistry, done in Europe, with a part (admittedly small) containing, as genuine division of the dissertation, a publication in Chinese - that also exists.

When and where does one stop a troublesome development or an impossibly slow and/or oscillating iteration? At the "Pauling Point"!

I hurriedly must add of course that quantum chemistry is not a succession of these and similar anecdotes. Yet there are situations - as cemented down (and well hidden) - in the literature where the reader is bound to smile and/or to wonder. It is for the enjoyment of the reader that I want to point out these things as well, together with the general aim as given in the headline.

Of course: chemistry in general had things like the 'Cold Fusion' or the 'dangerous polywater' - and, alas, also quantum chemistry has its "corpses in the closet". Human error is possible in any science, even if the natural sciences, and which in particular try to avoid this sensitive and highly annoying topic. Let alone the voluntary perceptions produced with the sole purpose to fame and career.

My starting consideration many years ago for this publication was that scientists have initiated something of importance in this field of chemistry - a new field then, a new field of interest. Similar to the building of bridges, high rises, airplanes, satelites, handies, and all that. All these things had their characteristic starting point as well as their typical development.

That's the same story with Quantum Chemistry. My emphasis here will be on Semiempirical Quantum Chemstry: How did that all come about? Who were these originators? What were their ideas?

That's what I want to show. And don't worry - I will be polemic at times!

There will be mild connections to the theory - no formulas, yet quotes for those more interested. I will try to connect a bit to the theory of science, to sociology (since science is, beyond doubt, a sociological process as well).

All intended and laid out for eeeasy reading!

The interviews are a little longer. Please accept my excuses for that. Nevertheless you might want to see and hear for yourself how these scientists present themselves, in their own subjectivity. I consider them as being time witnesses, people who participated in the advent of new ideas - a long time ago.

Eine quantenchemische Doktorarbeit, in Europa erstellt, die einen (wenngleich kleinen) Teil in der Form einer tatsächlichen chinesischen Veröffentlichung in chinesischer Schrift enthält - auch die gibt es.

Wann hört man in der Quantenchemie am besten mit einer leidigen Entwicklung oder schlecht laufenden Iteration auf? Am "Pauling Point"!

Natürlich ist Quantenchemie keine Aneinanderreihung solcher und ähnlicher Anekdoten - aber auch sie hat ihre Punkte, bei denen der Leser das menschlich-allzumenschliche durchspürt. Hier und da soll davon berichtet werden. Und natürlich, was in der Chemie die Kalte Fusion war, oder das 'gefährliche' Polywasser - auch die Quantenchemie "has it's corpses in the closet" - ihre Leichen im Schrank. Der menschliche Vorgang des Irrtums ist immer vorhanden, auch wenn gerade die aktiven Naturwissenschaften dies nicht gerne zugeben wollen. Von absichtlichen Täuschungen ganz zu schweigen.

Der Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Darstellung ist der, daß Menschen etwas erdacht haben. Wie im Brückenbau, im Hochbau, im Flugzeugbau und so weiter. Über das soll berichtet werden. Mit einigen Tatsachen aus der Theorieentwicklung, ohne viel Formeln. Milde gewürzt mit ein paar Überlegungen aus der Wissenschaftsphilosophie. Mit einigen mehr soziologisch zu sehenden Tabellen von Publikationsterminen oder ähnlichem. Kurz - alles in gut lesbarer Form. Der Leser soll die Welt der semiempirischen Methoden dem Namen nach kennen lernen, im Sinne einer nicht-technischen, geschichtlichen Darstellungsweise.

Menschen haben etwas erdacht, ausgehend von Heisenberg und Schrödinger. Nicht nur dessen imaginäre Katze, die übrigens mit Hoffmann's Kater Murr nur sehr wenig, vielleicht gar nichts gemeinsam hat. Außer vielleicht, daß beide zu den Katzen ein gespaltenes Verhältnis hatten. Doch zurück zum Thema. Dinge wurden erahnt, erdacht, erprobt, gemessen. Und dann - vergessen? Dabei haben diese Menschen Geschichte gemacht - Historie, abgelegt in mathematischen, physikalischen, chemischen und biologischen Bibliotheken. Als technische Detailarbeiten in der jeweiligen Disziplin. 60 Bände TCA, 50 Bände IJQC von anderen Reihen wie 30 Bänden AQC ganz zu schweigen. Dann die vielen Textbücher.
